ESEA and College and Career Readiness

President Obama praised Massachusetts' standards and said eleven states had lowered their math standards in the face of the No Child Left Behind Act in a meeting with the nation's governors. The President told the assembled governors in a White House event that his administration's ESEA reauthorization proposal will require states to adopt College and Career readiness standards in reading and math as a condition of receiving Title I funding.

The President wants to require states to adopt college and career-rea

diness standards as a condition of receiving Title I funds as part of this pending ESEA reauthorization proposal. (Presumably the Common Core's college/career-readiness standards, the only game in town).

This is a big shift, from incentivizing standards via the Race to the Top grants, to requiring it as part of the cornerstone of federal K-12 funding, Title I.
